The sun goes behind the ridge before it sets

Prayer timetables are calculated against the true horizon — the flat, unobstructed line the sun would cross if nothing were in the way. In a deep Alpine valley nothing is ever quite in the way, and the practical result is that the sun can disappear behind a ridge a substantial time before Maghrib actually arrives.

Families new to mountain living often assume the two are the same and set their evening around the wrong one. They are not the same, and the gap can be considerable depending on which way the valley faces and how steep its walls are.

For scheduling a lesson this matters in one specific way: if the class is pinned to “after Maghrib” and the household is reading the sky rather than the timetable, the timing will be wrong and inconsistent. Fixing the lesson to the clock avoids the problem entirely.

Twenty-six cantons, four languages, one clock

Cantonal calendars

School holidays are set cantonally rather than nationally, so dates differ between Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern. There is no single Swiss school year to plan around.

Four national languages

Lessons here are taught in English with Quranic Arabic taught directly, so a child schooled in German, French, Italian or Romansh starts from the same place.

Central European Time throughout

One clock nationwide, changing on the standard European dates. The only drift is against tutors outside Europe.

Our tutors

Taught by qualified Quran teachers

  • Native Arabic speakers with detailed knowledge of Makhraj and Tajweed, with Ijazah-certified tutors available at a higher rate.
  • Experienced in delivering a structured Islamic curriculum.
  • A choice of male and female tutors to suit your preference.
  • A Quran completion certificate is awarded when you finish your course.
Serving Switzerland and beyond

Online Quran classes for families across Switzerland, including Zurich, Geneva, Basel, and Bern

Because every class is held live over video, there's no commute and no fixed classroom location -- students join from Switzerland, including Zurich, Geneva, Basel, and Bern on a schedule built around Central European Time, with the same qualified, native Arabic-speaking tutors available to every family regardless of neighbourhood.

Where a small country is genuinely awkward, and where it is not

Switzerland is compact, but it is also vertical, and the two do not cancel out. A family can be forty minutes from a city by map and considerably further by road in winter, which has historically made regular in-person study in the valleys much harder to sustain than the distances suggest.

That is the specific problem an online arrangement removes, and it is worth being precise about the benefit. It is not convenience — it is that a household in a mountain canton is choosing from the same pool of tutors as one in Zurich, rather than from whoever is reachable in a valley. For specialised work such as Hifz or an Ijazah pathway, that difference is the whole thing.

The corollary is that continuity matters more here than in a dense city. Where a family in a large metro can change teacher at little cost, a household that has found a good fit should protect it, which is the real purpose of the free trial: to settle whether the teaching suits the student before anything depends on it.

Students join from Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern and the cantons between on identical terms, all on the same clock.

What families in Switzerland ask before enrolling

The sun sets behind the mountain well before Maghrib. Which do we follow?

The timetable. Prayer times are calculated against the true horizon, not the visible ridge line, and in a valley the two can be a long way apart.

Are school holidays the same across Switzerland?

No. They are set cantonally, so dates differ between cantons. Check your own rather than a national summary.

What language are lessons taught in?

English, with Quranic Arabic taught directly. Children schooled in any of the national languages begin from the same point.

Does living in a valley limit which tutors we can work with?

Not at all — that is the main reason families in the mountain cantons study this way. The choice of tutor is not constrained by what is reachable by road.

Which parts of Switzerland do you cover?

All cantons, with no difference in availability. There is no catchment area because there is no travel.

How often should lessons run?

Three or four short sessions a week works better than one or two long ones, for memorisation especially. Retention depends far more on how often material is revisited than on how long each sitting lasts.

Can we request a female tutor?

Yes. It is a routine request, and because the choice is not limited to who is locally reachable it can almost always be met.
