Michigan sits at the wrong end of its own time zone
Michigan keeps Eastern Time, but geographically it belongs further west, and the consequence is visible every summer evening. The sun sets noticeably later here than it does on the eastern seaboard on the same clock — past nine o'clock through much of June and early July.
For a family arranging lessons around prayer times, that is not a curiosity. It means Maghrib arrives late enough in summer that an after-Maghrib class is impractical for younger children, while in December the same prayer falls before most households have finished the working day.
The swing is wide enough that a schedule built in October will not still be comfortable in June unless it was built with that in mind.

What the late sunsets change
Summer evenings run long
An after-Maghrib lesson in June is a late-night lesson in Michigan. Most families move the class earlier in the day for the summer rather than pushing bedtime back.
Winter has the opposite problem
By December, Maghrib arrives mid-afternoon. The hour after it becomes the natural teaching slot, which is the reverse of the summer pattern.
Fixing to the clock is steadier
Rather than tracking a prayer time that moves across three hours in six months, most families settle on a winter time and a summer time and change twice a year.

“Booking around Ramadan and school exams was never a problem - they always found a time that worked.”

Two schedules, not twelve
The mistake we see most often in Michigan is not choosing a bad time. It is choosing a time and then adjusting it repeatedly, a few minutes at a time, as sunset drifts — until the lesson has moved an hour from where it started and nobody is sure when it actually is.
The alternative is to accept that this state needs two schedules a year and to set them deliberately. A winter time from roughly November, an earlier summer time from roughly April, and no negotiation in between. Students keep the habit because the habit stays still.
Michigan's school year is otherwise conventional — start in late summer, finish in early June, with winter and spring breaks in between. Neither break requires stopping, though both are long enough to cost a memorisation student real ground if nothing runs across them.
Families across Detroit, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Dearborn all work from the same clock and the same daylight pattern, so the advice does not change between them.
What families in Michigan ask before enrolling
Why does sunset feel so late here compared to the East Coast?
Because Michigan sits at the western edge of Eastern Time. On the same clock, the sun sets considerably later here than in New York, and the difference is most obvious in June.
Should we schedule around Maghrib?
Most families find it steadier not to. Maghrib moves across roughly three hours between December and June in Michigan, so a lesson pinned to it moves too. Two fixed times a year is easier to keep.
When should we switch to the summer schedule?
Around April, and back around November. The exact date matters less than picking one and holding it.
Which parts of Michigan do you serve?
All of it — Detroit, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Dearborn and beyond. There is no travel and therefore no catchment.
Do classes continue through the spring break?
A reduced schedule is usually the right answer. Recitation holds across a week; memorisation does not, and recovering it costs more than the revision would have.
Can we book lessons before school instead?
Yes, and for older students it is often the more durable choice. Evenings accumulate other commitments across a school year in a way that early mornings do not.
How long does it take to see progress in Tajweed?
Sooner than most parents expect on individual letters, and longer than they expect on fluent application. The first corrections land within a few weeks; carrying them into unfamiliar text without prompting takes months of regular practice.
