Speaking Arabic and reading Quran are different skills

The most common misconception we meet from families here is a reasonable one: that a child who hears and speaks Arabic at home has a head start on reading the Quran. Partly true, and less helpful than it sounds.

Spoken dialect and Quranic Arabic diverge in vocabulary, in grammar and — most importantly for recitation — in the precision expected of individual sounds. A child can be entirely fluent in conversation at home and still be guessing at letters on the page, because nobody has ever needed them to distinguish a ha from a ha in speech.

That gap is not a deficiency. But it does mean the starting point for such a student is different from both a complete beginner and a fluent reader, and teaching them as though they were either one wastes time.

Where the head start is real, and where it is not

Real: comfort and confidence

A student who already hears the language is not intimidated by it. They pick up rhythm and flow quickly, and they rarely stall the way an absolute beginner can in the first weeks.

Not real: letter precision

Conversation tolerates approximate sounds; recitation does not. The letters that dialect flattens together are exactly the ones Tajweed requires you to separate, and that has to be taught deliberately.

Not real: reading the script

Understanding speech and decoding text are separate skills. Plenty of confident speakers arrive unable to read fluently, and there is nothing unusual about it.

“I started as an adult beginner and was nervous, but my tutor never made me feel behind.”

What that means for how lessons are set up

The practical consequence is that the first few sessions with a student from an Arabic-speaking household should be diagnostic rather than assumed. A tutor needs to hear where the precision actually is before deciding where to begin, because the answer varies far more in this situation than it does with a beginner who has no Arabic at all.

It also means the free trial is doing more work here than usual. For most families a trial answers whether the tutor is a good fit. For a family in this position it also answers a question they may not have been able to settle themselves — whether their child needs Noorani Qaida from the beginning, or a targeted correction of six or seven specific letters, or something in between.

Beyond that the arrangements are ordinary. Dearborn keeps Eastern Time, sits at the western edge of it, and therefore has the same wide seasonal swing in sunset as the rest of Michigan: an after-Maghrib lesson is very late in June and very early in December. Two fixed schedules a year, rather than continuous small adjustments, is what most families settle on.

Students join from Dearborn, Detroit, Dearborn Heights, Westland and Canton on identical terms, since nothing about the arrangement depends on where you are.

What families in Dearborn ask before enrolling

My child speaks Arabic at home. Do they still need Noorani Qaida?

Sometimes yes, sometimes only parts of it. Spoken fluency does not guarantee accurate letter production or the ability to read the script, and those are what Qaida teaches. The trial lesson is the fastest way to find out which applies.

Is Quranic Arabic the same as what we speak at home?

Related but not the same. Vocabulary and grammar differ, and recitation asks for a precision in individual sounds that everyday conversation does not.

Will my child be bored if they already know the language?

Not if the lesson is pitched correctly, which is why the first sessions are diagnostic. Starting a fluent speaker at absolute-beginner level is the quickest way to lose their interest.

Do you teach adults as well?

Yes, and adult learners who grew up hearing Arabic but never learned to read are one of the more common cases we see.

What time of day do most local families book?

After school in winter, earlier in the day in summer — Michigan's sunset moves so much across the year that most households end up with a winter time and a summer time rather than one fixed slot.
