Guidance In Islam is the blessing that one can have. It is only Allah’s Guidance that guides you to the straight path. If someone is on the right path, the Blessing of Allah directs them between right and wrong deeds.

In the Quran, it is mentioned that the Guidance in Islam is only Allah’s Guidance.

“Indeed the only guidance is Allah’s Guidance!” (Al-Quran 6:7)

Guidance in Islam refers to Muslims’ principles and teachings to live a moral and fulfilling life. The Quran, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, guides various aspects of life, including belief, morality, social interactions, and personal conduct.

In addition to the Quran, Muslims also rely on the Hadiths, the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

What Does Quran say about Guidance in Islam?

A believer should seek Guidance from Quran. Allah revealed the Quran just for human beings’ Guidance because Creator knows where success and failure lie.

As Allah says in Quran,

“And declare (O Muhammad) that [the Quran] is a guidance and healing for the believers.”

(Al-Quran 41:40)

Quran distinguishes between wrong and right so humankind can understand well.

“A guidance for mankind and clear evidence and discrimination (between wrong).”

(Al-Quran 2:185)

And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a Believer – those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged, [even as much as] the speck on a date seed. (4:124)

Prayer for Guidance in Islam

In Islam, prayer is an essential means of seeking Guidance and direction from God.

Muslims are encouraged to turn to God and ask for His help, Guidance, and forgiveness. Several specific prayers in Islam are related explicitly to seeking Guidance, such as:

  • Recite Salat-ul-Istikhara

Recite Salat ul Istikhara before making an important decision or undertaking a significant action to seek Guidance in Islam from Allah Almighty.

“O Allaah, I seek Your Guidance [in making a choice] by Your knowledge. And I seek ability under Your power. And I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, and I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allaah, if in Your knowledge.

This matter (then it should be mentioned by name) is good for me both in this world and the Hereafter (or: in my religion, livelihood, and affairs). Then ordain it for me, make it easy, and bless it for me.

And if in Your knowledge it is terrible for me and my religion. My livelihood and my affairs (both in this world and the next). Then turn me away from it, [and turn it away from me]. And ordain the good wherever it may be and please me.”

It involves asking God to guide one in making the right choice and to show them what is best for them.

  • Dua for Guidance

Muslims can make Dua (supplication) for Guidance in any language and situation.

“Guide us to the straight path.” (Al-Quran 1:6)

“The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not (the path) of that evoked [You’rer] anger or of those who are astray.”

(Al-Quran 1:7)

  • Surah Al-Fatiha

Surah Fatiha, the first chapter of the Quran is the “Mother of the Quran.” It is recited in every unit of the five daily prayers and contains a supplication for Guidance in Islam. Asking God to show the way and to guide the believer on the straight path.

All praise is for Allah—Lord of all worlds.

The Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Master of the Day of Judgment.

You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.

Guide us along the Straight Path.

The path of those You have blessed—not those You are displeased with, or those who are astray.

May Allah guide the straight path in this world and Hereafter.
