The word Ashra means “ten” in Arabic, and in the context of Ramadan, it refers to each of the three ten-day periods within this holy month. The first Ashra signifies mercy, the second Ashra (days 11-20) is dedicated to forgiveness (Maghfirah), and the third Ashra focuses on salvation from the fire of hell. The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) emphasized the significance of each Ashra, saying:
“It (Ramadhan) is the month whose beginning is mercy, middle is forgiveness, and its end emancipation from the fire (of hell).”
The middle Ashra is a precious period for Muslims, as it serves as a reminder of Allah’s immense capacity for forgiveness. This is the time when we are encouraged to seek forgiveness (Maghfirah) with sincerity and to repent for our past mistakes and shortcomings. The second Ashra offers us a chance to purify our hearts and gain closeness to Allah by asking for His pardon and mercy.
The Importance of Seeking Forgiveness
During the second Ashra, Allah’s forgiveness is at its peak, making it a blessed time to seek pardon for our sins. In this period, we have the opportunity to reflect deeply on our actions and behaviours, turn to Allah, and ask for His forgiveness with a sincere heart. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) has said:
“Do repent in this month to Allah for your sins, and supplicate with raised hands at the time of prayer as these are the best times, during which Allah Al-Mighty looks at his servants with mercy. Allah answers if they supplicate, responds if they call, grants if He is asked, and accepts if they entreat. O People! You have made your conscience the slave of your desires. Make it free by invoking Allah for forgiveness. Your back may break from the heavy load of your sins, so prostrate (sajda) yourself before Allah, for long intervals, and make this load lighter.”
These words remind us of the weight of our sins and the mercy of Allah. By humbling ourselves before Allah, seeking His forgiveness, and making sincere repentance, we relieve ourselves of the burdens we carry and cleanse our souls.
Actions to Embrace During the Days of Forgiveness
In the second Ashra, there are specific actions we should focus on to fully embrace this period of forgiveness:
- Ask for Allah’s Forgiveness Frequently
Make it a priority to ask for forgiveness more during these days than at any other time. Sincere repentance involves not only seeking Allah’s pardon but also making a firm intention to refrain from repeating the sins. Approach these days with a sincere heart, genuinely seeking to transform and improve. - Perform Tauba Often
Tauba, or repentance, is beloved by Allah, and during this Ashra, He especially loves those who turn to Him with humility and sincerity. Seek forgiveness often, as Allah’s mercy is vast, and He delights in forgiving those who repent. Embrace this time as an opportunity to cleanse your heart and spirit. - Forgive Others
In the spirit of Maghfirah, extend forgiveness to your loved ones and those around you. Let go of grudges and past resentments, as Allah loves forgiveness and mercy. When we forgive others, we embody the values of Ramadan and demonstrate our willingness to follow the example set by Allah’s boundless compassion.
Embracing Forgiveness as a Path to Inner Peace
The second Ashra is not only about asking for Allah’s forgiveness but also about finding inner peace through releasing grudges and regrets. This is a time to reconcile with those we may have wronged or those who may have wronged us. By forgiving others, we create room in our hearts for love, peace, and spiritual growth, allowing us to continue our Ramadan journey with a clean heart and pure intentions.
Strengthening Our Connection with Allah
As we seek forgiveness in this blessed period, our connection with Allah deepens. By humbling ourselves in prayer, performing additional acts of worship, and asking for His mercy, we remind ourselves of His presence in our lives. The second Ashra is an invitation to cultivate our faith, increase our devotion, and recognize that forgiveness brings us closer to Allah, opening the door to His mercy and guidance.
In this sacred month, let us make the most of the second Ashra by actively seeking Allah’s forgiveness, extending kindness and forgiveness to others, and renewing our commitment to living a life that pleases Allah. May He accept our repentance, forgive our sins, and guide us towards righteousness. Ameen.
