A city where the fasting day swings by eight hours

London sits above the fifty-first parallel, and the consequence for Muslim families is larger here than the mild weather suggests. Between midwinter and midsummer the length of the fasting day in London changes by roughly eight hours — from under nine in late December to past seventeen in late June.

Because Ramadan moves through the solar year, that means the same month makes a very different demand on a London household depending on the decade. Families who learned their Ramadan routines during the short-fast years and have not revisited them since are usually the ones who find the long-fast years hardest.

None of this is an argument against studying during Ramadan. It is an argument for planning it rather than improvising, and the plan should change as the fasts lengthen.

Scheduling through a long-fast Ramadan

Avoid the last third of the afternoon

That is the hardest stretch of a seventeen-hour fast, and no amount of good intention makes a lesson productive in it. Move the class rather than attempt it.

After taraweeh, or early morning

The two workable windows. Older students generally do better after taraweeh; younger ones do better before school, when the day is still short.

Shorten and keep going

Twenty minutes held daily through the month is worth considerably more than an hour attempted twice and then abandoned.

The UK school year, and what half-terms cost

England's school year runs in three terms from early September to mid-July, each split by a half-term break of a week, with a fortnight at Christmas and another at Easter. That is more frequent interruption than the North American pattern, but each one is shorter.

Frequent short breaks are easier on recitation than on memorisation. A week away does very little harm to fluency and a noticeable amount to recently memorised material, and a student who takes all five or six of them off in a year has effectively lost a month and a half of consolidation without ever having taken a long holiday.

The remedy is small and dull: keep a reduced schedule across half-terms rather than stopping. Fifteen minutes, three times in the week, nothing new. It removes almost all of the recovery cost at almost no cost of its own.

The summer is the different case. Six weeks in July and August is long enough to justify either a genuine break or a deliberate intensive, and both are defensible. What is not defensible is leaving it undecided, because an undecided summer is almost always an empty one.

Students join from across Greater London and the wider UK, all on the same clock and the same term structure.

What parents in London ask before enrolling

How do you schedule lessons during a long Ramadan?

By moving them rather than cancelling them. The late afternoon is the hardest part of a long fasting day; after taraweeh or early morning both work far better. Shorter and more frequent beats long and occasional.

Do we need to change the lesson time between summer and winter?

If it is set against Maghrib, yes — sunset in London moves by several hours across the year. Many families avoid the problem by fixing the lesson to the clock instead and reviewing it twice a year.

Should we study through half-term?

A reduced schedule is worth it, particularly for memorisation. Individually the breaks are short; there are five or six of them a year, and collectively they add up to a great deal of lost consolidation.

Does the clock change affect our slot?

It can. The UK moves to British Summer Time in late March and back in late October, and other regions shift on different dates — or, in Australia's case, in the opposite season. Confirming at each changeover avoids the drift.

Which areas do you cover?

Greater London and the wider UK. The class is held over video, so there is no catchment area and no difference in tutor availability by postcode.
