One province, two very different amounts of daylight

Alberta runs from the forty-ninth parallel to the sixtieth, which is a long way, and the practical consequence is that a family in Lethbridge and a family in the far north are not having the same year at all.

In the south the seasonal swing is substantial but manageable. In the north it becomes extreme — very long summer days and very short winter ones, with midwinter afternoons that are effectively over by mid-afternoon.

Because prayer times follow the sun rather than the provincial border, a schedule built around Maghrib will behave quite differently at the two ends of the province, even though the clock is identical throughout.

Scheduling across a tall province

Use a local prayer timetable

Not a provincial one. The difference between the south and the north is large enough to matter for anyone timing lessons around sunset.

Fix the class to the clock

Particularly in the north, where Maghrib moves across a very wide range. Two deliberate schedules a year is steadier than continual adjustment.

One time zone, standard changeovers

Mountain Time throughout, shifting to daylight saving in March and back in November. There is no internal offset to manage.

The Alberta school year, and the Mountain Time advantage

Alberta's school year runs from just after Labour Day to the end of June, with a winter break around Christmas and a shorter one near Easter. It is a conventional shape, and neither break is long enough to require stopping — though both are long enough to cost a memorisation student real ground if nothing runs across them.

Mountain Time is a quiet advantage when it comes to booking. Alberta's evening falls two hours behind the eastern seaboard and outside the busiest windows in both directions, which means the mid-evening slot that is contested almost everywhere else is generally available here, often at short notice. Families arranging consecutive lessons for two or three children find it materially easier than they would in Ontario.

The other Alberta-specific consideration is winter travel. Across much of the province, an evening commitment that requires driving in January is one that quietly lapses, and that is truer the further north you go. A class held at home is unaffected, and the eight or nine hardest weeks of the year stop being a gap in the schedule.

Students join from Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge and the north of the province on identical terms, with no difference in tutor availability by distance.

What families in Alberta ask before enrolling

Do prayer times differ much within Alberta?

Enough to matter. The province spans eleven degrees of latitude, so the daylight swing in the north is considerably more extreme than in the south. Use a local timetable rather than a provincial one.

Is Mountain Time good for booking lessons?

Yes. Alberta evenings sit outside peak demand in both directions, so first-choice slots are usually available and consecutive sibling lessons are easier to arrange than in most markets.

Does winter weather affect classes?

Not the class itself, which is the main practical reason families here study this way. There is no journey involved at either end.

Should we keep lessons running over the Christmas break?

For memorisation, something light is worth keeping. A fortnight is roughly the point at which recently memorised passages begin to loosen.

Which parts of Alberta do you cover?

All of it, from the far south to the far north. There is no catchment area because there is no travel.

Can two or three children be taught back to back?

Yes, and Alberta is one of the easier places to arrange it, because the hours around your preferred slot are not heavily contested.

How long should a lesson be?

Half an hour suits most students, taken several times a week. Without a journey attached, a short lesson is worth booking in a way it would not otherwise be.
