Why Edmonton's daylight matters more than its time zone
Edmonton sits above the fifty-third parallel, which is further north than almost any other major city in North America, and the consequence shows up in the calendar rather than the clock. The gap between midwinter and midsummer here is not a matter of an hour or two. Sunset moves from the middle of the afternoon in late December to well past ten at night in late June.
For a family arranging Quran classes around prayer times, that swing is the single most useful thing to plan around, and it is the reason a schedule that worked in October often stops working by February without anyone quite noticing why.

Three things the northern latitude changes
None of these are obstacles. They are just facts that a schedule should be built around rather than discovered.
Maghrib moves a long way
In December the evening prayer arrives before most families have finished the working day. In June it arrives after many children are asleep. A class time fixed to Maghrib will move across the year; a class time fixed to the clock will not.
Summer Ramadan is demanding here
When Ramadan falls in the northern summer, the fasting day in Edmonton is among the longest anywhere Muslims live in numbers. Families usually shorten lessons and move them well away from the late afternoon rather than trying to hold a normal schedule.
Winter afternoons are short and dark
The practical effect is that after-school time feels like evening from November onward. Many Edmonton families bring the class forward by an hour over winter and move it back in March.

Mountain Time, and what it means for booking
Edmonton keeps Mountain Time, two hours behind Toronto and an hour behind Winnipeg, and Alberta observes daylight saving on the North American schedule. In practice that means a mid-evening slot in Edmonton is late evening on the eastern seaboard, so the times that are hardest to get in Ontario are often straightforward here.
Alberta's school year runs from early September to the end of June, with a break at Christmas and another around Easter. Neither is long enough to require stopping, but both are long enough to cost ground in memorisation if nothing runs across them.
The pattern that works best through an Edmonton winter is short and frequent rather than long and occasional. Twenty minutes four times a week survives a cold February in a way that an hour on Saturday does not.
What families in Edmonton ask before enrolling
How do you schedule around prayer times that move this much?
By fixing the lesson to the clock and reviewing it twice a year rather than chasing Maghrib week by week. Most Edmonton families settle on one winter time and one summer time and switch between them.
What happens during a summer Ramadan?
Lessons usually get shorter and move away from the late afternoon, which is the hardest part of a long fasting day. Some families shift to after taraweeh instead. Both work; what does not work is leaving the schedule untouched and hoping.
Is Mountain Time a disadvantage for booking?
Generally the opposite. Because Edmonton is two hours behind the eastern half of the continent, evening slots here overlap with times that are less contested, so first-choice bookings are easier to get than in Ontario.
Do you teach across Alberta or only in Edmonton?
Across the province. The class is held live over video, so there is no travel and no catchment area.
Our winter schedule keeps slipping. What are we doing wrong?
Usually nothing, beyond fixing the lesson to something that is itself moving. If the class is pegged to "after Maghrib", it will creep across the winter as sunset does, and by February it is an hour from where it started. Pegging it to the clock and reviewing twice a year is steadier.
Do you run classes over the Christmas and Easter breaks?
Yes, and for memorisation we would recommend it, though at a reduced length. Neither break is long enough to require a full stop, and both are long enough for ground to be lost if nothing runs at all.
