Start dates that no longer agree
Virginia spent decades with most of its school districts starting after Labor Day. That requirement has since been loosened, and the result is a state where start dates now vary by district — some in mid-August, some still after the holiday.
The effect is a summer that ends on different days depending on where you live, and a household in Northern Virginia may find its neighbours two counties away already back at school while its own children have another fortnight free.
For a recurring lesson that unpredictability argues for the same conclusion it does everywhere: do not let the school calendar decide when study happens.

Two Virginias, for scheduling purposes
The northern commuter belt
Arlington and Alexandria run on Washington's working hours, which means a parent is often not home until well after seven. The after-school window is the student's, not the parent's, and a class that needs no driver can use it.
The rest of the state
Richmond, Virginia Beach and the smaller districts have shorter commutes and more usable evenings, but the same scarcity of good tutors locally — which is the reason most families look online in the first place.
One time zone throughout
Eastern Time covers the whole state, so nothing about the offset changes between Alexandria and Virginia Beach. Only the calendar and the commute differ.
Taught by qualified Quran teachers
- Native Arabic speakers with detailed knowledge of Makhraj and Tajweed, with Ijazah-certified tutors available at a higher rate.
- Experienced in delivering a structured Islamic curriculum.
- A choice of male and female tutors to suit your preference.
- A Quran completion certificate is awarded when you finish your course.

Using the long Virginia summer
Where the start date is unpredictable, the end of the summer is the part worth planning. A student who has done nothing since June needs several weeks in the autumn simply to get back to where they were, and that recovery is invisible — it looks like slow progress rather than lost ground.
The cheapest insurance is a reduced summer schedule: shorter lessons, fewer per week, no new memorisation, just enough to keep what exists from loosening. It costs a fraction of the time that September recovery does.
It is also the one time of year when an intensive genuinely makes sense. With no school competing for attention, a student who wants to move quickly through Qaida or consolidate a juz has a clear run at it, and August in particular tends to be quiet for bookings.
Whichever route you take, deciding it in May rather than in July is most of the battle. Summer schedules that are arranged in advance survive; ones left to be sorted out later generally do not happen at all.
What families in Virginia ask before enrolling
When does the school year start where we are?
It depends on your district — Virginia no longer requires a uniform post-Labor Day start, so some districts begin in mid-August and others later. It is worth checking yours before setting an autumn schedule.
Is summer a good time for intensive study?
It is the best time. Nothing else is competing for the student's attention, and August is usually the quietest month for bookings, so preferred slots are easier to get.
We are in Northern Virginia and both parents commute. Does that work?
Yes, and it is the most common situation we see there. Because no one has to drive the student anywhere, the class can use the after-school hours rather than waiting for a parent to get home.
Which parts of Virginia do you cover?
The whole state — Richmond, Virginia Beach, Arlington, Alexandria and elsewhere. There is no catchment area.
Should we stop entirely over the summer?
For recitation you can. For memorisation it is expensive: the autumn recovery usually costs more time than a light summer schedule would have.
Can a teenager fit lessons around sport and part-time work?
Usually, by moving the lesson to the morning. Teenage evenings fill up across a school year in a way that early mornings do not, and without travel an early slot costs only the time it takes.
Do you teach adults?
Yes, including complete beginners. One-to-one lessons remove the self-consciousness that stops many adults joining a group class in the first place.
