Ramadan moves, and at this latitude that changes everything

Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, Ramadan arrives about eleven days earlier each year and works its way backwards through the seasons over roughly three decades. In most of the world that produces a mild variation. In Sweden it produces two entirely different months.

A Ramadan falling in the Swedish midwinter is short — the fasting day can be a matter of a few hours. A Ramadan falling at midsummer, at these latitudes, is among the longest anywhere Muslims live in numbers. The same family, in the same house, will experience both within a single lifetime.

The practical lesson is that Ramadan routines should be built for the decade you are actually in, rather than inherited from parents who kept the month in a different season. Families who assume last generation's pattern will hold are the ones caught out.

Adjusting the schedule as the season shifts

Short-fast years are the easy ones

When Ramadan falls in winter, the ordinary lesson schedule usually survives the month with minor adjustment. It is worth using those years to build ground rather than coast.

Long-fast years need the class moved

Not cancelled. The late afternoon is the hardest stretch of a very long fast; shifting the lesson to after taraweeh, or to the morning, keeps continuity without fighting it.

Shorten rather than skip

Twenty minutes held daily through a demanding month is worth considerably more than an hour attempted twice and then abandoned.

The Swedish school year, and a winter worth planning for

Sweden's school year runs in two terms — autumn from late August to around Christmas, spring from January to early June — with a winter sports week and an Easter break in between. The winter week is staggered between regions rather than taken nationwide at once, so a national assumption about the dates will not hold everywhere.

The long summer break runs from June to late August, which is comfortably long enough for recently memorised material to loosen. It is also, for exactly the same reason, the best clear run at concentrated study in the year. Families who decide in May which of those two things the summer will be are the ones who still have a schedule in September.

Through the winter the issue is attention rather than timing. Sweden's populated south sits around fifty-five to sixty degrees north, and the afternoons are dark early enough that a five o'clock lesson in January is noticeably harder work than the same lesson in May. Moving it forward an hour for the darkest months usually does more for progress than adding length would.

Teaching is in English with Quranic Arabic taught directly. Students join from Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Uppsala and across the country on identical terms.

What families in Sweden ask before enrolling

Why is Ramadan so different from one decade to the next here?

Because the lunar calendar moves the month about eleven days earlier each year, so it drifts through the seasons over roughly thirty years. At Swedish latitudes that means the fasting day can be very short or very long depending on the era.

Should we stop lessons during a long-fast Ramadan?

Better to move and shorten them. The late afternoon is the hardest part of a long fast; after taraweeh or early morning both work far better than cancelling.

Is the winter break the same across Sweden?

No. The winter sports week is staggered between regions, so check your own rather than a national date.

Should the lesson time change in winter?

Many families move it earlier from November to March. The darkness affects concentration more than it affects timing.

Which parts of Sweden do you cover?

All of it, north and south, with no difference in tutor availability. There is no catchment area.
