North of the Arctic Circle, the sun stops cooperating

Norway extends well past the Arctic Circle. In Tromsø and further north the sun does not set at all for weeks in summer, and does not rise for weeks in winter. Prayer times are normally derived from sunrise, sunset and twilight, and where those events do not occur, the ordinary calculation has nothing to work from.

This is not a modern edge case. Scholars have taken several approaches to it. Two of the most common involve estimating times from the nearest latitude where the sun behaves normally, or following the timings of a reference location such as Makkah. Which approach a household follows is a question for its own scholarly authority, not for a Quran academy.

What we can be useful about is the practical consequence: whichever method your family follows, a lesson pinned to “after Maghrib” becomes unstable for part of the year. Fixing the class to the clock removes the problem without touching the question of which timing to observe.

Scheduling where daylight is extreme

Fix the lesson to the clock

Not to sunset. In the far north, sunset is unavailable as an anchor for part of the year, and in the south it swings across many hours.

Expect two schedules a year

A winter time and a summer time, changed deliberately. This is more important in Norway than almost anywhere else we teach.

The method is yours to decide

Whichever method your household follows, lessons are arranged around whatever you observe. We schedule to it rather than advise on it.

Serving Norway and beyond

Online Quran classes for families across Norway, including Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Stavanger

Because every class is held live over video, there's no commute and no fixed classroom location -- students join from Norway, including Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Stavanger on a schedule built around Central European Time, with the same qualified, native Arabic-speaking tutors available to every family regardless of neighbourhood.

The southern majority, and the ordinary Norwegian year

Most of Norway's population lives well south of the Arctic Circle, around Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger, where the sun does rise and set all year. Even there, though, the swing is wide by European standards: winter afternoons are dark early and midsummer evenings stay light very late.

The effect on a weekly lesson is mostly about attention rather than timing. A class at five in the afternoon is a different proposition in January than in May, and families who move it forward through the darkest months generally see steadier concentration, not just steadier attendance.

Norway's school year runs from mid-August to late June, with a winter holiday, an Easter break and the long summer. The winter and Easter breaks are short enough that fluent recitation holds across them unaided; for a student in the middle of memorisation, keeping a small amount of revision running removes almost all of the recovery cost.

Teaching is in English, with Quranic Arabic taught directly rather than through Norwegian. Students join from Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger and the far north on identical terms, and the choice of tutor is not affected by how far north you are.

What families in Norway ask before enrolling

How are prayer times worked out where the sun does not set?

Scholars have taken several approaches. Two of the most common are estimating from the nearest latitude with normal sunrise and sunset, or following the timings of a reference location. Which your family follows is a matter for your own scholarly authority; we schedule lessons around whatever you observe.

Should we set the lesson against Maghrib?

In Norway, generally not. It is unavailable as an anchor for part of the year in the far north and moves across many hours in the south. Fixing to the clock is far steadier.

Do we need different summer and winter lesson times?

Most Norwegian families end up with two, changed deliberately rather than drifting. The daylight swing here makes it more worthwhile than in most countries.

What language are lessons taught in?

English, with the Arabic taught directly. A child schooled in Norwegian starts from the same place as any other beginner.

Does living in the far north limit our choice of tutor?

No. There is no travel involved, so a family in Tromsø chooses from exactly the same tutors as one in Oslo.
