Sunset before three in December, after ten in June
Stockholm lies far enough north that its daylight changes more than almost anywhere our students live. December sunsets come before three o'clock; midsummer sunsets after ten, with barely any darkness in between.
For families who plan their evening around prayer, that changes everything about when a lesson fits. In winter, the hour after Maghrib arrives by mid-afternoon. In summer, Maghrib and Isha come so late that a lesson for children has to move to the daytime.

Our hours in Stockholm
Swedish time is six hours ahead of New York for most of the year, so in Stockholm our teaching window is noon to 5:30 AM.
Winter afternoons
From November to February the hour after Maghrib falls in the early to mid-afternoon, inside our teaching day.
Summer daytime
With Maghrib after ten in June, a lunchtime or afternoon lesson works best for children.
The changeover gap
When Sweden and the US change clocks on different dates, in March and around late October, the first available lesson moves to 11:00 AM Stockholm time for a few weeks.

The Swedish school year and its breaks
Swedish schools start in mid to late August and finish in early to mid-June, with an autumn break (höstlov) around the end of October, a Christmas break, a winter sports week (sportlov) in February or March whose week depends on the region, and an Easter break.
The long summer, from June to August, coincides with the lightest weeks of the year, when evening lessons are hardest to place. A few daytime lessons a week through the summer keep memorized work fresh, and the lesson can move back to the afternoon or evening once the autumn term starts and the evenings darken again.
Stockholm County's suburbs reach well beyond the city, and a weekday trip on the tunnelbana or pendeltåg to an evening class can easily take longer than the lesson itself. An online class keeps the lesson to its actual length.
