One country, up to five different local times

Australia keeps three standard time zones — Western at eight hours ahead of UTC, Central at nine and a half, and Eastern at ten. That alone would be manageable. What complicates it is that only some states observe daylight saving.

New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT move their clocks forward each October. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not. For roughly half the year, therefore, the country is running on five distinct local times rather than three, and Brisbane and Sydney — both nominally on eastern time — are an hour apart.

For a family arranging a recurring lesson, or for relatives in two states trying to coordinate, this is the single thing most worth getting right before anything is booked.

Getting the time right the first time

Name your city, not your zone

“Seven in the evening, Perth time” is unambiguous. “Seven, Australian time” is not, and is the most common cause of a missed first lesson we see from Australia.

Remember which half of the year it is

The gaps between Australian cities change in October and April. A slot that was simultaneous with relatives interstate in August may not be in December.

Against the northern hemisphere, the swing is two hours

Australia shifts its clocks in the opposite season to Europe and North America. Twice a year the offset moves by two hours in a single step rather than one.

Serving Australia and beyond

Online Quran classes for families across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth

Because every class is held live over video, there's no commute and no fixed classroom location -- students join from Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth on a schedule built around Australian Eastern Time, with the same qualified, native Arabic-speaking tutors available to every family regardless of neighbourhood.

A continent wide enough to change the fasting day

Australia stretches from about ten degrees south to about forty-three, which is a wider latitude range than most countries this page could describe. The practical consequence is that Ramadan is a noticeably different month in Darwin than in Hobart — day length near the tropics barely moves across the year, while in Tasmania it swings substantially.

That matters for scheduling because the advice that suits one end of the country does not suit the other. A northern family can usually keep one lesson time all year. A southern family is better off with a summer time and a winter time, changed deliberately twice a year rather than drifting a few minutes at a time.

The school year is the one thing that is broadly consistent: four terms running from late January to mid-December, with the long holiday across December and January. That break is six weeks or more in most states, which is longer than any single break in the northern hemisphere and long enough for memorised material to loosen if nothing runs across it.

Students join from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and everywhere between on identical terms, whichever of the country's clocks they happen to keep.

What families in Australia ask before enrolling

How do we avoid confusion about the time?

Give the city rather than the zone when the slot is agreed. Australia runs on as many as five different local times in the southern summer, so “eastern time” is not specific enough.

Why are Brisbane and Sydney an hour apart in summer?

Because New South Wales observes daylight saving and Queensland does not. Both are described as eastern time, and for half the year they are not the same time.

Do we need to change our lesson time between seasons?

In the southern states, usually yes — the daylight swing is wide enough to be worth two fixed schedules a year. Closer to the tropics, one time generally works all year.

What should we do over the December break?

Either a light revision schedule or a deliberate intensive. Six weeks is too long to leave entirely open, particularly for memorisation.

Which parts of Australia do you cover?

All of them. The class is held live over video, so no state or territory is better or worse served than any other.
