A city that already schedules around Eid

New York City public schools close for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. That is unusual enough in North America to be worth saying plainly, and it changes the planning problem for a New York family in a way that does not apply almost anywhere else on this continent.

It means the two days of the year that most often collide with school are already clear. What remains is the month around them — Ramadan itself, when the household's whole rhythm moves and a class scheduled for the ordinary evening no longer fits.

The families who handle that well decide in advance rather than improvising in week one. The month is predictable; the disruption only feels sudden if nobody has planned for it.

Planning the Ramadan month

Three decisions cover most of it.

Move the slot, do not cancel it

A month is long enough to lose real ground in memorisation. Shifting the lesson to after taraweeh, or to the late morning at weekends, keeps continuity without fighting the fast.

Shorten rather than skip

Twenty minutes held every day through Ramadan is worth considerably more than an hour attempted twice and abandoned.

Book the change early

After-taraweeh slots are the most requested hours of the year across every time zone. Families who arrange the shift in advance keep their own tutor; families who wait often cannot.

The rest of the New York year

Outside Ramadan, the constraint in New York is the same one that shapes everything else here: distance is measured in time, not miles. A class across the borough can cost ninety minutes of a school evening, which is why in-person study tends to collapse into one long weekend session — the worst possible shape for memorisation, which rewards frequency far more than duration.

Without the travel, the lesson can sit where it actually belongs: several short sessions across the week, in the gap between school and dinner. That is the single biggest structural change for most families here, and it usually matters more than any question about curriculum.

The city calendar is otherwise conventional — September through late June, a winter recess, a spring recess, and the mid-winter break in February. None is long enough to require stopping. All are long enough to justify a reduced schedule rather than none at all.

What parents in New York ask before enrolling

Do you schedule around Ramadan?

Yes, and we would encourage planning it rather than pausing. Most families move the lesson to after taraweeh and shorten it. Arranging the change before the month starts is what keeps you with your own tutor.

Our school district already closes for Eid. Do classes run those days?

They can, but most families prefer not to. A lesson on Eid morning is rarely anyone's priority, and the day is easier to simply skip and pick up afterwards.

How do you cover students across the boroughs?

There is no catchment. Students join from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and the wider tri-state area, including Long Island and New Jersey, on identical terms.

Is a short weekday lesson really better than one long weekend session?

For memorisation, considerably. Retention responds to how often material is revisited far more than to how long each sitting lasts. The reason in-person study usually ends up as one long session is travel, not teaching.

What happens over the February mid-winter break?

A reduced schedule is usually right. It is short enough that recitation holds by itself, but a Hifz student who keeps fifteen minutes of revision running comes back without any recovery to do.
