The Holy Quran has always been a light in my life, but it wasn’t until I truly began to understand its deeper meaning that it transformed my entire world. I want to share with you how the Quran became my closest companion during one of the most challenging times of my life.
The Day My World Changed
On May 17th, 2005, my life was turned upside down. I was in a hospital, sitting next to my friend when the doctor came in and delivered the life-altering news: I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. It felt as though my world came crashing down. Everything around me went dark, and I could barely hear the doctor’s words.
He handed me a packet and explained the long process ahead—tests, surgeries, and doctor appointments. It all seemed too much to handle, but the doctor urged me to stay positive. That’s when I remembered Allah’s words in the Quran: “Do not be afraid” (Surah Taha, Ayah 68). I realized that if I placed my trust in Allah, I had nothing to fear.
Drawing Parallels Between My Health and Salah
During my treatment, the doctor emphasized that I must never miss my daily doses of medicine, as doing so could lead to a recurrence of cancer. It reminded me of Salah, our daily prayers. Just as I wouldn’t miss my medication, which is crucial for my health in this world, I couldn’t afford to miss Salah, the medicine for my soul that guarantees success in the Hereafter.
If I was careful about taking my medicine to protect my temporary life, how much more cautious should I be about protecting my eternal life? This reflection deepened my connection to both my physical and spiritual health.
Exercise and Spiritual Health
The doctor also advised me to exercise regularly and stay active, which reminded me of something I once learned about Salah. It’s not just about the motions—it’s about how it impacts your heart, soften your eyes, and transform your soul. Just as physical exercise is essential for the body, Salah is crucial for the health of the soul.
Finding Strength in the Quran Academy
The doctor suggested I join a support group and not isolate myself. But I was fortunate to already have a powerful support system—the Quran Academy. Every morning at 8:30 AM, I joined a call with Shazia Athar, where we discussed lessons from the Quran and shared our experiences. These daily calls were my lifeline, giving me strength and a sense of community.
Another teacher, Shazia Nawaz, spoke with such grace and compassion that she made even the hardest lessons easy to understand. Her words felt like they were meant just for me, easing the burdens I was carrying.
The Quran: My Eternal Friend
Through all the darkness, the Quran became my closest friend. When I was battling depression and loneliness, it was the Quran that provided comfort. It answered my questions, told me stories of patience, and reminded me to trust Allah. Allah is the only true healer, the One who answers all our duas, and the only One who can give life to the sick.
The Quran has been my constant companion, and it has guided me through the toughest times. I know it will continue to be my dearest friend, InshaAllah.
