Patience

A western commentator, William Patron, has observed: One of the fruits of Islam has been that stubborn durable patience which comes out of the submission to the absolute will of God.

And what an apt observation indeed. Islam puts a great deal of emphasis on the importance of sabr in our lives, manners , bearings and daily routines. In fact the very spirit of Islam is unimaginable without Patience.

The Qur’an repeatedly stresses the need for sabr.

In Islam, patience holds a profound significance, guiding believers to endure challenges with faith. The Quran highlights this virtue across various chapters. For instance, in Chapter 31, Allah commands us to “Endure with fortitude whatever befalls you” (31:17). Similarly, Chapter 8 advises, “Have sabr. Allah is with those who are patient” (8:46). Chapter 103 further reinforces this, warning of perdition for those who lack faith and good deeds, urging believers to “exhort one another to justice and fortitude.”

What is True Patience?

Sabr isn’t merely calming down after anger; it’s about subduing your frustration at its peak, controlling the urge to react hastily. This restraint is the essence of true sabr, as those who master this are among the As-Sabiroon, “The Patient Ones.” Patience shields us from conflicts and hasty decisions that can lead to greater harm.

Consider a daily scenario: while preparing dinner, you run out of salt and rush to the supermarket. Frustrated by the long line, you push through, trying to get ahead. This impatience could easily lead to conflict or even being asked to leave. ssabr, however, would have seen you home peacefully with what you needed.

The Levels of Patience

Sabr can be categorized into four distinct levels, ranging from negative to the highest, most praiseworthy form:

  1. Level 1: Forbidden Impatience
    • At this lowest level, a person becomes angry and questions Allah’s decree, asking, “Why me?” This attitude is prohibited as it contradicts trust in Allah’s wisdom and can lead one astray. Physical expressions of anger, like self-harm, loud complaints, or destructive actions, fall into this category.
  2. Level 2: The Struggle of sabr
    • This level reflects a commendable struggle, where a person bears hardship and resists the urge to rebel against Allah’s decree, despite the difficulty. Such effort is rewarded immensely, as Allah promises, “Indeed, Allah is with the patient” (8:46).
  3. Level 3: Contentment in Patience
    • A higher level of sabr  is achieved when one maintains calm without feeling burdened by the trial. This person feels content and trusts Allah completely, showing resilience and accepting challenges with grace.
  4. Level 4: Gratitude in sabr
    • The highest level of patience is achieved when a person not only endures hardship but also thanks Allah for it. This reflects a deep faith, recognizing that challenges are a means of purification. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “No affliction strikes a Muslim except that Allah expiates sins through it, even a thorn that pricks him” (Bukhari & Muslim).

Reflecting on Your Patience

Understanding sabr invites self-reflection. Assess your current level of sabr honestly and set a goal to elevate it. Let this be a month of conscious improvement in sabr, aiming to reach a higher level of endurance and grace, Insha’Allah.

Practical Tip to Strengthen Patience

An effective tip to nurture sabr is to pause and reflect before reacting in challenging situations. When faced with loss or hardship, take a moment and recite:

“Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him, we will return.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:156)

This reminder of our purpose and connection with Allah helps calm the mind, reinforcing patience.

Verses of Encouragement on Patience

In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah provides further guidance:

  • “O you who have believed, seek help through sabr and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (2:153)
  • “And We will surely test you with something of fear, hunger, and a loss of wealth and lives, but give good tidings to the patient.” (2:155)
  • “Who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him, we will return.'” (2:156)
  • “Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.” (2:157)

May Allah make us among the “Rightly Guided” and bless us with the strength to attain the highest level of sabr. Ameen.
