The Ultimate Goal of Every Muslim
Entering Jannah, or Paradise, is the ultimate goal for every Muslim. It is the promise of eternal peace, joy, and nearness to Allah. The very thought of Jannah inspires and strengthens our faith, igniting our hearts with hope and devotion. Among the many beautiful hadiths about Jannah, one stands out, describing the mercy and patience of Allah and the journey of the very last man to enter Paradise.
This hadith has a special place in the hearts of many Muslims, as it reminds us of Allah’s boundless compassion and the imperfections inherent in us as humans.
The Hadith of the Last Man Entering Jannah
The hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA) captures a profound moment of hope and divine mercy. It tells the story of a man who, after being cleansed in Hellfire for his sins, is finally given the chance to enter Paradise. Let us delve into this beautiful narration, appreciating the mercy Allah bestows even on the last man who will enter Jannah.
The Man’s Plea to Turn Away from Hellfire
As narrated, there will remain one last man facing the Hellfire. Overwhelmed by the searing heat and smoke, he will cry out to his Lord, saying, “O Lord! Its vapor has poisoned and smoked me, and its flame has burnt me; please turn my face away from the Fire.” In desperation, he will continuously plead with Allah, seeking relief.
Allah’s Gentle Reproach and Mercy
In response, Allah will ask him, “Perhaps, if I grant you this request, you will ask for another?” The man, desperate to be saved from the torment, swears that he will ask for nothing more. Allah then mercifully turns his face away from the Fire. Yet, after this mercy, the man will once again plead, “O Lord, bring me near the gate of Paradise.”
Despite promising not to ask for more, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to the promise of Jannah. Allah, in His kindness and patience, moves the man closer, cautioning him again about making further requests. But the man, seeing the beauty of Jannah, cannot resist and continues to ask until he is finally allowed to enter.
Allah’s Smiling Mercy and the Man’s Joy
The man’s persistence and Allah’s boundless mercy culminate in a touching moment. The man pleads, “O Lord! Do not make me the most wretched of Your creation.” Eventually, Allah will smile upon him, and this divine smile marks the moment the man is granted entry into Jannah.
Upon entering, the man will be overwhelmed by the beauty and blessings of Paradise. He will be invited to wish for anything his heart desires, and all his wishes will be fulfilled. Allah will then say, “All this and as much again are for you.”
Abu Hurairah (RA) added that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “This is for you and ten times as much.” [Hadith: Bukhari]
Lessons from This Hadith
The story of the last man to enter Jannah is a beautiful reminder of Allah’s infinite mercy and compassion. Even the final person granted entry into Paradise will be showered with unimaginable blessings and happiness. It humbles us, showing us that despite our imperfections and shortcomings, Allah’s mercy is greater than anything we can imagine.
This hadith also underscores that Jannah is not achieved merely by our actions but by Allah’s mercy. Our efforts in this world are essential, but they serve as a means to gain Allah’s pleasure and mercy, which ultimately opens the gates of Paradise.
Seeking Allah’s Mercy and Aiming for Jannah
While this life is a place of trials and struggles, it is also our gateway to Jannah. We are encouraged to do good, seek forgiveness, and continuously ask Allah for His mercy. Instead of striving to make this world a paradise, we should focus on earning the eternal paradise that awaits in the Hereafter.
SubhanAllah, may we all be granted the mercy of Allah and be among the dwellers of Jannah.

Jazakum ALLAH Khayer.
