Wasting valuable aspects of our lives is, unfortunately, common. Often, we overlook the blessings and resources we have, allowing them to slip by without making the most of them. As the saying goes, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” Here are ten key things in life that we often waste and suggestions on how to benefit from them more consciously.
1. Knowledge
Knowledge is a gift, but it’s wasted when we fail to act upon it. True knowledge is meant to guide our actions and help us make better decisions in alignment with our faith and values. Let’s not let our learning go unused; instead, let it serve as a foundation for growth, character, and contribution to the world around us.
2. Actions
Our actions are wasted when we perform them without sincerity. Every action, whether big or small, should be done to seek Allah’s pleasure and better ourselves. By aligning our intentions, we can transform even mundane tasks into acts of worship and personal development.
3. Wealth
We often waste our wealth by spending it on things that bring no true benefit, neither in this life nor in the hereafter. Wealth is a means, not an end. Let us use it wisely, investing in things that will bring reward, help others, and support us in both this life and the akhirah. Let’s avoid wasting our resources on superficial things and instead aim to build lasting value.
4. Hearts
Our hearts are wasted when they are empty of Allah’s love. Instead of filling our hearts with temporary attachments and distractions, we should nurture our love for Allah and the desire to seek His nearness. A heart grounded in faith finds peace and purpose, unshaken by the fleeting concerns of this world.
5. Bodies
Our bodies are a trust from Allah, yet we waste them when we do not use them for worship and service. By engaging in ibadah (worship) and acts of kindness, we honour the purpose of our physical form and contribute positively to the world around us. Let’s use our strength and abilities to fulfill our duties and serve Allah’s creation.
6. Love
Our emotional love is often misplaced, and directed towards things or people in a way that detracts from our relationship with Allah. True love should first be directed toward Allah, who is our Creator and Sustainer. By grounding our love in faith, we protect ourselves from the pain of unfulfilled attachments and find a deeper, more lasting peace.
7. Time
Time is one of the most valuable gifts we have, yet we often waste it without realizing it. Each moment is an opportunity for growth, repentance, and good deeds. To make up for lost time, we can focus on correcting past mistakes and using the present wisely, ensuring that our time is spent in ways that bring us closer to Allah.
8. Intellect
Our intellect is wasted when we engage in activities that lack purpose or benefit. Intellect is a tool to seek knowledge, develop ourselves, and serve society positively. We should channel our thinking towards things that enrich our minds, improve our character, and help us fulfill our purpose in life.
9. Service
Service is wasted when we devote our efforts to things that do not bring us closer to Allah or provide benefit. Serving others is a noble act, especially when it’s done with the right intention. Let’s focus our efforts on helping those who are in need, supporting good causes, and making a difference that aligns with our values.
10. Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)
Dhikr is wasted when it fails to impact our hearts. Remembrance of Allah should be done sincerely, with mindfulness and devotion. When we engage in dhikr, it should connect us to Allah, reminding us of His presence and mercy. True dhikr fills our hearts with peace and keeps us conscious of our purpose.
A Reminder for Conscious Living
This reflection, based on a lesson from Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, encourages us to live mindfully, making intentional choices that align with our faith and values. Let us take these aspects of our lives seriously, valuing each one as a precious gift. By recognizing what we waste and making a conscious effort to use it well, we can lead a fulfilling and meaningful life that pleases Allah.
