Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. The whole institution of Islam is uplift on 5 fundamental pillars:

1)  Bearing witness that there is no God but Allah\Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is    His servant and apostle.

2)      Establishment of Salaat.

3)      Paying of Zakat.

4)      Performance of Hajj.

5)      Fasting in Ramadhaan.

So, as arranged in order, after EMAAN, the most important task to be performed bodily is SALAAT. Then immediately the next pillar of Islam is zakat. So, where ever order of salaat is mentioned, the order for zakat is there almost every time. Because Zakat was made compulsory at Makkah at the same time as Salaat. This information can be verified by the Surahs of the Qur’an. The laws of Zakat are mentioned in the Quran. And The amount, distribution, and other details were defined at Madinah in the second year of Hijri.

Benefits Of Zakat:

There are two major benefits of giving zakat:

1)      It reduces the moral ill of greed and love of wealth. From the heart of the giver, thus reducing his sins and urge for more sins too.

2)      Poor class if helped to live good standards. By this money. (which in turn ensures many other benefits eg reducing poverty, social ills from society, etc).

Along with these two major benefits,  hadeeth proves many other benefits of zakat:

  1. Cause Increase in wealth.
  2. Gives Protection from losses.
  3.  A cause thus established for Allah’s forgiveness and blessings are obtained.
  4. Provides Safety from calamities.
  5. Protection from the wrath of Allah and from a bad death.
  6.  The Zakat will provide a shelter on the Day of Judgment.
  7.  Security from seventy misfortunes.
  8.  It will serve as a shield from the fires of Jahannam.
  9.  Zakat contributes to Barkat in wealth.
  10.  It saves from fear and grief.
  11. And most important of all, it is a source of gaining the pleasure of Allah.

Who Is Sahib-e-Nisaab:

The meaning of Sahib-e-Nisaab is to be the owner of the Nisaab. Nisaab refers to that level (of property). Specified by Shariah. It is a standard for Zakaah becoming compulsory.

So, Not only must one own this much but it must also be in excess of debts and fundamental needs. Such as clothing, abode, animals for transport, slaves for service, armaments, books for the people of knowledge if they are not for trade. Similarly, no Zakah is payable on the tools for a skills man, (if not for sale). Nisaab varies for different commodities. Therefore, whoever meets the criteria of sahib-e-Nisaab, is liable to pay zakaah.

In AlQuran:

Who is eligible for receiving zakat (masaarif-e-zakat). It is completely explained in the Holy Quran:

Zakaat (contributions of cash money, merchandise, animals etc.) are for the poor and the needy; and those who collect them. For those whose hearts are to be reconciled; to free the captives and the debtors. And for the cause of Allah Ta’aala: and for the wayfarer a duty ordained by Allah Ta’aala. Allah Ta’aala is Knowing, Wise. (Surah Taubah:60)

All of these masarif-e-zakat must not be possessing Nisaab. Except for the people who collect It (al-Aamileen)

Zakat is strictly Fardh on people who meet the condition of eligibility of sahib-e-Nisab. So, There are several commandments of ALLAH (SWT). Which explain rulings and penalties on nonpayers of zakat.

According to the Qur’an:

And there are those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah. Announce to them a most grievous penalty. (when) On the Day of Qiyaamah heat will be produced out of that wealth in the fire of Jahannam then with it they will be branded on their foreheads and their flanks and backs. (It will be said to them) This is the treasure which you hoarded for yourselves. Taste then the treasure that you had been hoarding. (Surah Taubah:34)

In Hadith:

The persons on whom Allah has bestowed wealth. And he does not give Zakaat. On the Day of Qiyaamah. His wealth will be turned into a venomous bald serpent which will wind around his neck and bite his jaws and say, “I am your wealth, I am your treasure. (Bukhari)
