Hadith narrated from Abu Malik about Music

The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

Indeed, there will be in my Ummah (Followers) such people who will regard fornication, silk, wine, and musical instruments as permissible for themselves [Sahi Bukhari]

Today music & singing became a crucial part of our lives. We cannot visualize our day without it. From TV to radio, mobile phones to iPod’s everything is filled with musical tunes.

Now the discussion at hand is to prove from the Holy Qur’an and the authentic traditions of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) that singing & music is forbidden in Islam.

Harms and Effects of Music:

So, we need to find permissible means of entertainment within the purview of Islamic Shariah. There are great harms and ill-effects of music & singing.

“And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way. (Surah Al-Isra, Verse 32)

Islam does not only prohibit adultery and fornication, but also those things that may lead to it.

  • The other main reasons for the prohibition of music in Islam, as it affects one’s emotions creates passion. And leads to various physiological changes in the person. It is a psychological proven fact that two things are instrumental in arousing the human sexual desire, one being the voice of a female (for males) and the other music.

Allah Almighty says:

“O wives of the prophet! You are not like other women if you are God-fearing. So do not be soft in speech. Lust in whose heart is disease should be moved with desire. (Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 32)

  • Experiments carried out by doctors and researchers confirm that music is such that it does not only affect the brain. But each and every organ of the body. So, there is a close relationship between music and bodily movements.
  • However, music instills the ideologies of the Non-Muslims in the heart and mind. The messages of today’s music follow a general theme of love, fornication, drugs, and freedom.

Rulings on Music and Unlawful singing In Islam:

Hadiths & Quranic Verses on Music is forbidden in Islam.

There are numerous pieces of evidence in the Qur’an and Sunnah which support this view.

1) “Do you then wonder at this recital? And will you laugh and not weep.  Wasting your time in vanities (leisure or idle play)? But fall ye down in prostration to Allah. And adore (Him). (Surah Najm 53:57-62)

2) “Lead to destruction those whom you can among them with your (seductive) voice. (Surah al-Isra, Verse 64)

3) “And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allâh without knowledge. And takes it (the Path of Allâh) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire) (Surah Luqman Verse 6)

Permissibility of Singing and Listening Islamic Songs in Islam:

We can’t create a vacuum by saying that each and every kind of singing is forbidden in Islam. We need to find the moral bounds of Islamic teachings. So, in Islam there is a certain kind of singing which is permissible. With particular conditions of Islam. The lyrics of the songs must be pure and innocent. Therefore, it must kept within the moral bounds set by Islamic teachings.

Naat (Descriptive praise of the Prophet) in a poem is a highly praiseworthy act. That carries reward and receives untold blessings from Allah. However, Naat is known to rouse in the soul an overwhelming desire to invoke blessings and salutations upon him.

Conclusion

So, In the light of the above evidence from the Qur’an, sayings of our beloved Prophet (Peace be upon him) show the conclusive ruling with regards to music.
Perhaps, for fair-minded and objective readers, the summary will make it clear that the view that unlawful music and singing is permissible in Islam has no firm basis.
