Giving and Forgiving in Islam

by | Jan 30, 2012

The materialistic world we are living in, calculates the worth of a person by measuring how much he/she “gets” and “receives” from others. Be in form of money, love, attention, care, respect or time. It counts a getter worthier than the giver.A concept totally opposite to the Islamic one. If the value was in getting and receiving. Allah would have guided His Prophet Muhammad S.A.W to retain what He S.A.W received from others but this was never the case. The instructions to the Muslims are to give and spread good and goodness among the people of Allah. And it is in giving that Allah has put Barkat. Barkat is that increases many folds the quantity of things that you originally gave as mentioned in Quran.

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes.in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and knowing.” (Al-Quran 2:261)

This should be a belief of a true Muslim. Momin that it is only in giving that we get. What we give to our people or society is the reaction that entails and equal and opposite reaction. i.e. Getting!

“Everything we give to others comes back many times. Instead of giving shouting, hatred, criticism, and curse.let’s build our wealth by giving love, respect, praise and blessings to everyone we see.” (Faiez Seyal)

How to Spend your Wealth?

Islam gives us many opportunities and chances for giving. It reminds us to give from our wealth during Ramazan in the form of Zakat. So that the needy may enjoy their Eids as well. To help us realize the importance and urgency of giving. We are reminded again and again by our Creator. That the time for giving is limited but we cannot count for how long we will be collecting its fruits.

“O you who have believed. spend from that which We have provided for you before there comes a Day. in which there is no exchange and no friendship and no intercession. And the disbelievers – they are the wrongdoers.” (Al-Quran 2:261)

Allah is Merciful:

Allah is so merciful and ready to accept our good deeds. He does not require us to give huge amounts in charity, or to donate our full wealth. A true Muslim must remember that Allah accepted the charity of a companion of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W when he had nothing to give or to contribute in Ghazwa-e-Tabook. So he prayed all the night long to Allah and wished that whatever wrong he had been done by other Muslims is what he gives as charity in the way of Islam. And then he was given the good news by the Apostle of Allah that his charity was among the best selected charities. This leads us to strengthen our belief that Forgiving is one of the best forms of Giving.

“And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it. but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation.his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.” (Al-Quran 42:40)

Wise people say that forgiving is a way that helps you put your burdens aside and relaxes ourselves. Many of us are carrying burdens on our hearts because someone wronged us.Because someone did not give us what was rightfully ours, because someone ignored us.Wise people say Give what you want to get.  So we must forgive others because we want ourselves to be forgiven by our Lord.We must give care, love, time and money to others. As Allah has promised us, we will see His blessings coming back manifolds to us.
