Friends: In our series of The Twenty Blessed Companions, next comes the Companion of Prophet S.A.W Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A. Here is his brief life history.

Family:

Tribe: Banu Salimah

Children: Five. One daughter and Four sons including Mauz and Ma’az who killed Abu Jehal.

Embracing Islam:

Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A was not one of the early adopters of Islam. He resisted for quite long. He used to fear Syedna Musab bin Umair R.A (the ambassador of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W in Madina) since many people including heads of tribes Aws and khazraj embraced Islam on his hands.

When the young men of the Tribe Banu Salimah embraced Islam and also the son of Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A, then one day he asked his son to recite some of the revelations. His son went on to recite Surah Fatiha:

✿All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the Alameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists)

✿The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

✿The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day Resurrection

✿You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything)

✿Guide us to the Straight Way

✿The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace , not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray.

 Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A

On listening to this,  Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A remarked: ‘What a beautiful revelation! Are all the revelations like this?’ His son replied: ‘There are more of them more beautiful than this.’ Though he admired the words of Allah, Syedna Amru used to resist Islam and continue his idol worshiping. He had an idol of his own kept at home. He served it for many years and had a deep affiliation with the idol.

Since boys of Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A and their friends had embraced Islam, they wanted the old father to become a Muslim as well. Failing the attempts to convince him, they made a plan. The boys would stealthily enter father’s home temple at night, pick up the idol and throw it into a dirty pit.

Next morning, Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A would search for it everywhere ending the search on finding it. He used to wash it, sent it and again start worshiping it. And this became the routine as the boys made it a habit to throw the idol into the dirty well every night.
At last he got fed up of saving, cleaning and re-serving the idol. One morning, after he had washed and imbued the idol with a sweet scent, he took his sword and hanged it around its neck and said: “I have failed to find the culprits. Now I hope you can catch them and be able to defend yourself ”

Next day he found the idol tied to a dead dog in a nearby pit. On finding it he said: “How can I worship these baubles which cannot fend for themselves?”. And it was then that he accepted Islam.

Ghazwa Uhad:

Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A could not participate in the Ghazwa Badr since his four sons participated and they asked Prophet Muhammad S.A.W not to allow their father due to his old age and a lame leg.

A year after, Ghazwa Uhad started and he successfully got a permission from Prophet Muhammad S.A.W to take part in it. His sons kept asking the Prophet not to allow their father but Prophet Muhammad S.A.W said:

“Don’t stop him. Probably Allah will bless him with martyrdom. “

While leaving for the battle field Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A said to his wife:

“I hope that I’ll walk in the Paradise with this lame leg.”

Martyrdom:

Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A, his son Khallad R.A and the slave Abu Aiman, all the three were killed by a horse rider Aswad bin Jaoona while they were fighting bravely in battle.

While his wife Hind, the daughter of Syedna Amru bin Haram, was steadily advancing from battle field towards Madinah taking the bodies of her martyr family members, her husband Amru bin Jamuh, her son and her brother, Hazrat Ayesha Siddiqa R.A asked her: “O Hind, where are you going?”. She replied: “To Madinah, to bury my husband, my brother and my son”. She said: “I know that the Holy Prophet S.A.W is safe and well. Whatever befalls us is immaterial as long as He S.A.W is protected. Allah has blessed us with martyrdom, and the infidels will soon retreat in total disappointment.”

The camel however did not advance outside the Uhad and according to the instructions from the Messenger of Allah, the martyrs of Uhad were buried in the battle field.

In The Paradise:

Prophet Muahammad S.A.W while walking past the bodies of the Martyrs of Uhad saw Syedna Amru bin Jamuh R.A and his son and said:

“Its like I am seeing you walking in Paradise with a perfect leg.”

May the souls of Martyrs of Ghazwa Uhad rest in peace forever AMEEN SUMA AMEEN.
